Flags of the World

Flag:

A piece of cloth attached by one edge to a pole or rope as a country's emblem.
It is believed that the Ancient Egyptians were the first to fly flaglike streamers, these were attached to long poles or standards and were used in battle, a practice that continued throughout history.
Most flags are oblong or square. One end of the flag is attached to a staff or halyard. This end is called the Hoist.

The part of the flag that falls free is called the Fly while the quarter section at the top, next to the staff, is the Canton.
Adopted in 1903, the design for the Australian flag was the result of a competition which boasted five winners.
The large star, under the Union Jack, has seven points representing the States and Territories of Australia.
